Economic Impact of Cargo Flights

Moffett's $3.5M operating defecit sounds like a lot of money until you compare it to the potential economic losses that could be wreaked by subjecting such a populous area to intolerable noise. The only estimate I have seen on the impact on house prices to being in a flight path is 15%; clearly the conclusion would not change even if that estimate were off by an order of magnitude.

Suzanne Petroni, Moffett Federal Airfield Marketing Manager, claims the correct value for the impact of cargo flights is 0%, because of noise abatement policies being adopted.

Data is from the 1990 U.S. Census, at http://cedr.lbl.gov/cdrom/doc/lookup_doc.html. Total property value is calculated based on the median rather than the average value, and so is on the low side. Not considered are impacts on commercial real estate, loss in property tax revenue, or loss in sales tax revenue.
