I would like to correct several misleading statements and assumptionsthat appeared in your article on the proposed Federal Express facility inSanta Clara (Page 1B, June 13).
The Santa Clara facility is totally unrelated to the issues of Sunnyvaleand Mountain View. I assure you that FedEx has the utmost respect for thosecommunities and would not presume to make any assumptions with regard to San Jose's Master Plan or the possibility of aircraft access at MoffettField. We are keenly aware that Sunnyvale and Mountain View will be reviewinga proposed air cargo project at Moffett Field over the next few months.
The proposed Santa Clara facility is primarily a trucking facility which would handle heavy freight and does not rely on any current or future aircraft operations at San Jose or Moffett Field.
The real estate developer quoted in the article was mistaken in describingthis proposed facility as a hub. San Jose/Silicon Valley area is not a hubarea. FedEx's western hub is located in Oakland and is nearly three timesas large as that proposed in Santa Clara.
As we have said to everyone who has asked, this facility represents amove from one location to another. Neither the current facility or the proposedone is located on airport property in either San Jose or Santa Clara. Whilewe are excited about operating out of a new and larger facility, this developmentand use of this facility should not be blown out of proportion.
The assumptions made on this issue were made by your newspaper, not FederalExpress, and you do us and your readers a disservice in relating this facilityto the issues involving San Jose or Moffett Field.
